Joanna Bloor is known for saying “Every decision made about you and your opportunities is made in a room you’re not in.” It always gets people’s attention as it reminds us all that people “choose to opt into ” us all the time – as friends, as colleagues, as collaborators.

Creator of the Opt-In Equation, Joanna believes this is the missing (or at least silent) conversation we’re not having in the workplace today. “We tend to focus on the past and what we’ve done when in reality we are all choosing people based on our perception of their potential, and in today’s working world we don’t talk about this choice, it’s worse, we’re making people guess. She also points out that the Opt-In Equation is a bi-directional equation – collaboration works when people opt into each other, it doesn’t when the choice is only one way. It’s why, Joanna suggests, the great resignation is getting people’s attention – more people are opting out.
